As American as Apple Pie!

As American as apple pie! 🇺🇲 🥧 🍎

How great is it when something as delicious as an apple is so good for you!?

The American Institute of Cancer Research #AICR says, "Apples provide dietary fiber and polyphenol compounds that partner with gut microbes to create an environment that may help to reduce the risk of cancer. Observational population studies link apples with a lower risk of the estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) form of breast cancer."

In addition, there is probable evidence that foods, like apples, that are rich in fiber (keep the peel!), decrease the risk of colorectal cancer as well as weight gain or being overweight or obese. Excess body fat increases the risk for 12 types of cancer.

There is probable evidence that non-starchy vegetables and fruit decrease the risk of mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophageal, lung, stomach, and colorectal cancers.

Rather than traditional fruit pies, I'm a big fan of a good crisp made with oats, whole wheat pastry flour, walnuts and maple syrup. Attached is a link to a wonderful recipe from the brilliant Cynthia Lair, an author and former professor for an apple crisp. https://www.thirahealth.com/2020/04/29/apple-crisp/

Happy 4th!
