August 6-12 is National #FarmersMarketWeek! This is the 24th year this event, which celebrates the vital role farmers play in our national food system, has occured. Read on to learn why I think food purchasing produce from Farmer's Markets is especially good for individuals undergoing treatment and for survivors.
According to the Farmers Market Coalition, Farmers Markets:
- Preserve Farmland and Rural Livelihoods
- Stimulate Local Economies
- Increase Access to Fresh, Nutritious Food
- Support Healthy Communities
- Promote Sustainability
I believe there's a huge benefit to purchasing produce directly from a farmer. The Farmer's Market Coalition says that on average, food travels over 1,000 miles from the point of production to the retail store. In contrast, many farmers markets only allow vendors to sell food produced within 200 miles. Some markets only have food grown within 50 miles. Between transport time, time on the shelf and the time it takes to prepare and enjoy the produce, nutrient degradation may occur with items purchased at the grocery. Farmer's frequently pick produce hours before going to market ensuring fresh, delicious, nutrient-dense produce .
I believe consuming seasonal, nutrient-dense, fresh produce when vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals are ar their peak is especially important for survivors and people who are undergoing treatment! It's also a pleasant way to spend a summer morning outdoors in your community! Want to know where to find a market near you? I've included a link below! Oh, and be sure to pick up a mood-boosting bouquet of zinnias or sunflowers!
