A #cancerdiagnosis is one of the most stressful life events you or a family member can receive. As you navigate treatment and survivorship, it is essential to equip yourself with effective ways to manage stress.
First it helps to understand a little bit about cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone released by the adrenal gland. It regulates sleep, controls blood pressure, increases blood glucose, and influences how the body uses fats, carbohydrates and protein. In momentary stressful situation situations, it's beneficial for a 'fight-or-flight' response. However, increased, sustained cortisol levels can increase inflammation (which can contribute to the development of some cancers) and blood-pressure.
Eating well can support stress levels. Consumption of a nutrient-dense diet, including omega-3 fats, fruits and vegetables may help to regulate cortisol levels.
Omega-3 fats are found in fatty fish, (salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel and herring) walnuts, chia seeds and ground flax seeds (whole flax seeds will pass through you). Some eggs contain Omega-3 fats. The chickens are fed flax. Check the label to see if it says Omega-3. Fruits and vegetables such as avocado, bananas, broccoli, pumpkin seeds and spinach are rich in magnesium which helps to decrease inflammation and metabolize cortisol.
Foods to avoid include alcohol, caffeine as well as sugary foods and drinks.
It's also important to prioritize sleep move your body, get outside and engage in social activities you enjoy. Doing things you enjoy and experimenting with new hobbies can also be helpful.
Last but not least, lavender has calming effect. It supports sleep, reduces pain, inflammation, and anxiety. It's why I chose it for my logo! Teas and oils or lotions (non-synthetic) can help with relaxation. Note - I don't recommend ingesting essential oils.
Having good strategies to manage stress will help you from diagnosis through survivorship!
