Is Summer Really Over? Enjoy Cancer Protective Phytochemicals Summer's Bounty of Produce

Cancer Protective Phytochemicals

Ask any kiddo and they'll tell you that summer is over. Labor Day has passed. Pools are closed. But there's technically there's still a week left of summer and Mother Nature has a bounty summer produce rich in cancer protective phytochemicals (protective compounds in plants that offer us protection as well) that are important to consume whether you're undergoing treatment or are a survivor.

While I was off last week I visited Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and made it a point to travel to an outstanding farmer's market in Bloomington, Indiana to scope out some gorgeous produce. I felt like I'd won the lottery when I was gifted a slew of farm fresh tomatoes, apples, cilantro and parsley from my brother's neighbors at the farmer's market. He sells herbs and veggies to subscribers and brings cut flowers to sell at market - he sent me home with several gorgeous bouquets! I made gazpacho, added tomato slices to sandwiches, and enjoyed them in salads and stir-fries. I have a few left and plan to make raw tomato basil soup - one of my all time favorite summer meals! (Recipe can be found here on my Youtube channel (https://youtu.be/CgJF9yzDt8U). I found perfectly ripe peaches, plums and delightful corn on the cob! On a recent trip to Whole Foods, I spied some beautiful squash! There's beautiful produce everywhere you look! And the good news is, there are cancer protective phytochemicals in all of them! (mic drop!)

If you're at all inclined to experiment with new fruits or veggies, now is an ideal time! Need inspiration? The American Institute of Cancer Research has loads of recipes here:

Enjoy the bounty that this last week of summer has to offer!
