More Herbs, Less Salt Day: Nine of my favorite herbs! (plus a couple of my favorite spices/recipes)

It's 'More Herbs, Less Salt Day' - a day to celebrate all of the wonderful flavor and protective qualities herbs have to offer and to remember what a terrific alternative they are to salt! Salt is used liberally in restaurant and processed foods and can be problematic for people with some health conditions to consume. Herbs and spices, on the other hand, have many beneficial properties, may be cancer protective and useful to offset side effects during treatment.

Turmeric and Ginger are both spices but allow me to include them in the discussion as they have so much to offer! Turmeric has a polyphenol or compound, curcumin, which is anti-inflammatory, an antioxidant and may inhibit the growth of tumor cells. There are many ways to use turmeric including soups and curries. I enjoy turmeric in golden milk. (recipe below). I do NOT recommend and STRONGLY DISCOURAGE taking turmeric as a supplement.

Most everyone has used ginger ale for an upset stomach at one point or another! Ginger is an antioxidant and is anti-inflammatory. It aids in easing nausea and can be used as an appetite stimulant. Thin slices can be steeped in hot water to make tea. Dried ginger can be added to warm tea and milk along with cinnamon, clove, and cardamom to make a soothing chai.

I've included links to 2 short videos I made about the beneficial properties of herbs you may have growing in your garden (Lavender, dill, oregano, sage, peppermint, thyme, rosemary, parsley and one on basil alone). Looking for an easy recipe to celebrate today? I recommend this easy to make, raw tomato basil soup. Recipe here: https://youtu.be/CgJF9yzDt8U

What are your favorite herbs and spices that are your go to in the kitchen cabinet? (Before you go to your medicine cabinet for relief?)
