#NationalNutritionMonth Tip #14 Reduce Added Sugar

Not only do foods and drinks with added sugars contribute empty calories and little or no nutrition but they also contribute to chronic inflammation. While acute inflammation is a normal part of the healing process, chronic inflammation is harder to spot and is more damaging. It is involved in the disease process of asthma, Alzheimer's, cancer, heart disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, and type 2 diabetes.

The Nutrition Facts label on many foods identifies "added sugars" and ingredient labels lists ingredients in the order that corresponds with the amount of that ingredient. So if sugar is listed first or second, etc., the product contains a lot of sugar!

Note: Artificial sweeteners may not be the best solution and should be used in moderation if at all. Hight fructose corn syrup should be avoided or kept to a minimum.
