#Nationalnutritionmonth Tip #9 Drink More Water

Quench your thirst with water instead of drinks with added sugars. This includes fruit, energy and sport drinks, sweetened teas and coffees. Sugary drinks contribute to type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease.

Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water, especially if you are active, or live or work in hot conditions. Sparkling water, infused water, flavored water and seltzers are all good options. Plain tea and coffee can be part of a healthy diet. Be mindful that caffeinated beverages are diuretics.

Artificial sweeteners are not a good long-term strategy for sweetening food and beverages.

Some tips include carrying an insulated water bottle with you and refilling it throughout the day, having water with meals, keeping herbs, cucumber and citrus fruit around to infuse water and keeping flavored waters in the fridge for times when you crave carbonation.
