Supplement Selection

Updated: Nov 1, 2023

Considering using supplements but aren’t sure which ones to select?

Consider making changes to your diet. Nutrients from food are absorbed better than supplements. When additional supplementation is appropriate it’s important to do your homework. Not all supplements are created equal. The best ones have been designed by a doctor or scientist.

Supplements are not regulated by the FDA. They may:

· contain more or less of an ingredient that what is noted on the label

· there may be additional ingredients that aren’t listed that have the potential to be harmful

· make claims about benefits may or may not be accurate

Want to select high quality supplements?

High quality supplements will have an independent third party test each batch to ensure ingredients are what they claim to be. National Safety Foundation, Consumer Labs and USP Dietary Supplement Verification Program do third party testing and supplement brands will display their logos on the label.

Most high quality supplement brands will specialize in a couple of product lines (probiotics or fish oil for example) and not manufacture a full line of products.

It is best to purchase supplements directly from the manufacturer or from a reputable organization. I trust many of the brands found on Fullscript.

It is important to tell your doctor and care team about any supplements you use. This is especially important for patients with cancer as there are interactions that can occur with some supplements and some forms of treatment.
