Does Cancer Really Feed on Sugar?
Let me guess, you have loads of Halloween candy around the house and at work today. Halloween is a time for spooks, scares, and superstitions. But not all myths and misconceptions are confined to the realm of ghosts and goblins. There's a persistent belief that lingers year-round: the idea that cancer feeds on sugar. This spooky notion has created confusion and fear. Today I'm resharing an article to unravel the truth about this myth and debunk the misconceptions surrounding the relationship between sugar and cancer.
I would encourage you to read the brief but powerful article linked below in The New York Times. The simple answer is that glucose is the energy source for all of our cells - even our brain cells! Sugar can contribute to inflammation which can contribute to the development of some cancers. Eating a diet rich in whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables is key to prevention. Limiting sugar sweetened beverages and treats is advised. Artificial sweeteners should also be used sparingly, if at all! My advice: pick out a few favorites from the leftover Halloween candy and either pitch or share the rest. Enjoy the sweets you love in moderation along with lots of nutrient dense foods.
